Chapter 20

Mel plonked herself down on Erin’s couch, swinging her legs, clad in navy skinny jeans, onto the plump cushions. ‘Ah, comfort at last. I’ve been on my feet all day.’

Erin handed her a cup of coffee. ‘Here you are, Madam.’

Mel accepted the coffee with a grateful smile. ‘Bloody students. Our first day back after the holidays, and already I’m reduced to a headache-inflicted shell of my usual carefree self.’

With her blonde hair gathered in two perky pigtails and her nautical-inspired red and white striped top, Mel looked fresh and youthful, and not at all like the sufferer of a crippling headache. Her white canvas shoes had been left by the door, and Erin wondered idly if Mel had gone to school dressed like this, or if she’d changed after she’d got home.

‘Like your jeans,’ she remarked.

‘Thanks. My Year 12s like them too. They even asked for the name of the online store where I bought them.’

‘I didn’t know that teachers at Macquarie Grammar School were permitted to wear skinny jeans,’ Erin commented in a prim tone.

‘It’s the first day back after the holidays, and everyone’s trying to ease themselves in, me included,’ Mel replied unrepentantly. ‘I must say, Sir Jack appeared to be in a particularly good mood today. He was positively beaming from ear to ear.’

‘Was he?’ Erin couldn’t help smiling.

‘Yes, indeed he was.’ Mel adopted an officious tone. ‘So all went well with the offspring?’

‘If you mean Jessica and Talia, yes, all went well.’

‘So it’s all systems go?’

Erin paused. It was scary, putting it like that, as though her and Jack’s relationship was now set in stone.

Rather suddenly, she felt like changing the subject.

‘I’m thinking of having a party,’ she announced. The idea had been circling since she had moved in, but had only voiced itself now.

‘Woo-hoo!’ Mel swung her legs down off the couch, and sat forward eagerly. ‘When, where, who, what …’

Her excitement was infectious, and Erin laughed as she attempted to reply. ‘Sometime in the next few weeks, depending on everyone’s availability. Here. You and Jack and some people from work. Cocktails, finger food, that kind of thing.’

‘Awesome.’ Mel clapped her hands. ‘You can put me in charge of cocktails.’

‘Absolutely not. Everyone will end up with alcohol poisoning.’

‘Music, then.’

‘Okay,’ Erin agreed, though she suspected that Mel’s taste in music would be slightly too juvenile for the people she had in mind. ‘Actually, the party will be a good opportunity for you to meet Adam,’ she added in what she hoped was a casual tone.

Mel narrowed her baby-blue eyes. ‘You’re not trying to fix me up with that hyperactive boss of yours, are you?’

‘Absolutely not,’ Erin assured her, even though that was precisely what she had in mind.

Now that she knew Adam didn’t have a girlfriend, she’d decided that he was the perfect man for Mel.
